What is Vagonetto?

Inspired by envisioned miners, Vagonetto boasts the recreation of bauxite extraction. The ambitious project was undertaken by S&B Industrial Minerals S.A. in 1998. Five years later, a unique Theme Park preserving and depicting the history and memories of the miners was opened to the public.

Within the breathtaking and theatrical environment of Mine 850, the actual gallery that unveiled bauxite 50 years ago, visitors of today have a unique opportunity to experience onsite the techniques of bauxite mining and the awesome work achieved by man, some 200 meters under the surface of the earth.

The enormous appeal of Vagonetto and the enthusiastic welcome of the public, triggered for expansions and improvements. Under the auspices and the financial subsidy of the European Union, it was made possible to install state-of-the-art audio guided systems, similar to those featured in world renowned museums and galleries. But the new era of the Park, was concluded in November 2009, when the Wing of Digital Interactive Technologies opened doors to the public. In a stunning atmosphere visitors may participate in virtual drilling, travel to space or learn the life-story of miners.

Vagonetto is located within the premises of S&B on the 51st klm Lamia – Amfissa National Road, in Fokis. It contributes to the tourist development of the area and brings light to the history of bauxite exploitation. Sustainable development, environmental concerns and methods to preserve nature are Vagonetto’s prime targets. It is more than an experience for generations of all ages.

Encompassing innovation by means of implementing new technology, Vagonetto establishes a new model of alternative tourism and enhances aspects of educational interest.

The tour begins with a journey to the center of the earth – Mine Gallery 850, then followed by a visit to the park’s Exhibition Area and is concluded in the Wing of Digital Interactive Technologies.
